NHPD HOLDS 12TH ANNUAL “TOY SHOW” AT SCSU

(12/22/2006) NEW HAVEN – More than one thousand city children attended the 12th annual Rudolph Toy Show sponsored by the New Haven Department of Police Service with support from the New Haven Housing Authority and held at Southern Connecticut State University on Sunday, 17 December 2006. The yearly show provides holiday gifts for children throughout the city, with a focus on children who reside in public housing.

Student volunteers from Southern Connecticut State University, along with members of the Board of Young Adult Police Commissioners and officers from the NHPD led by Lieutenant Pat Redding, provided entertainment and crafts for the children. These activities were followed by a visit to SCSU’s Lyman Center from Santa, Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. Each child received a toy.

Transportation for the children, who came from all neighborhoods of the city, was provided by First Student Bus Company at no cost; their drivers all volunteered their time. Other community partners who provided assistance included SCSU’s student volunteers, the SCSU Police Department and Chief Joseph Dooley, Metro North Railroad, Christopher Martins Restaurant and the Chucky Supper Club.

“This is a wonderful annual event and a great example of community policing at work,” said Chief Francisco Ortiz, Jr. “We truly appreciate the cooperation of the administration and students at Southern, all the people at the Housing Authority who assist us, plus everyone who donates toys for the kids, especially the people who participate in Christopher Martins Christmas Run for Children. Without all this community support and cooperation, these children may not have a very merry Christmas.”
